Projected Investment Growth

How to use this analysisHide instructions
This analysis uses past market index performance during a specified period of time to calculate the projected growth of an amount invested in a market index fund (tracking the same index) during a future period of time.
  1. Select a market index.
  2. Select the past period of time that will be used as the basis for market index performance. For example, if "2 years" is selected, index performance is determined for the last two years of the available data. The end of any past period selected is the very last trading session available in the database. For more realistic projections, longer past periods of time should be selected.
  3. Enter an initial investment amount that would be made now. Do not include a currency symbol.
  4. Select an investment time period. This is the duration of time the initial investment is allowed to grow.
  5. Run the analysis. The analysis will use the market index performance for the selected past time period to determine the projected growth of the initial investment amount over the selected investment time period. The chart will show a comparison of the initial investement and the final projected value of the investment at the end of the investment period.

Based on past performance of the S&P 500 index from 2/7/2015 to 2/7/2025, $1,000 invested on 2/7/2025 in an index fund tracking the S&P 500 index will have a projected value of $218,070 on 2/7/2075. Dividends are not included in the analysis, and the dollar amounts are not corrected for inflation. This is based on a projected average annual growth of 11.36%, which will lead to a projected cumulative growth of 21,707.04% over the investment time period of 50.03 years.

Here is an idea! When a teenager turns 15 years old, family members should join forces and invest $1,000 on behalf of the teenager in an index fund tracking the S&P 500 index. Even without adding to it monthly, this will make a very nice addition to the teenager's retirement portfolio 50 years later at the retirement age of 65. While the expense ratios of index funds can vary, they are generally very small and are not included in this calculation.
